2013 Advent & Christmas Celebrations

2000 years ago, a baby was born to a couple visiting a strange town. Unable to find proper lodging, the infant had to be laid in a animal feed trough. He was worshiped by lowly shepherds and Eastern emissaries. Prophets had fortold his birth, promising that with him a light would come into the dark world. But who was this babe, who would grow up to be Jesus the Savior?

This Advent, Pastor Darryl's Sunday morning sermons will focus on the "I AM" sayings in John's Gospel. Through these sayings ("I AM the Bread of the World," "I AM the Vine," etc.) we will gain a deeper understanding of who this Savior really is.

Please join us! We welcome all to the following programs and services. Unless otherwise noted, there is no charge and no reservation required for any of them. Please call the church office at 704-938-4623 or send an email to FirstPresb@FirstPresb.org for more information.

Hanging-of-the-Greens
Sunday, November 24 - we'll begin at 4:00 p.m., setting up the Chrismon Tree in the Sanctuary. Everyone is invited to come anytime between then and 7:30 to help decorate the Chrismon Tree and Sanctuary and the rest of the church facilities. Childcare is available in the nursery, 4:00-6:00. A chili and soup supper will be served in the Fellowship Hall at 5:15-6:15.

Advent Supper and Children/Youth Musical
Sunday, December 8, 6:00 p.m. - We will gather in the Fellowship Hall for a Covered Dish Supper. Afterwards, the Kidz Khoir and youth of the church will present We Three Spies, created by Christy Semsen. This lively musical combines delightful storytelling, clever songs, and some spot-on spiritual truth. Bring a dish or two to share, and come enjoy great fellowship and a fun program.

Piedmont  Choral Society Christmas Concert
Friday, December 13, 7:00 p.m. - This outstanding community choir will present the Vivaldi's Gloria, as well as a selection of favorite Christmas carols and other choral pieces. In our sanctuary.

Once Upon a Night Cantata
Sunday, December 15, 11:00 a.m. - The Chancel Choir will present this original compilation of Christmas songs that retell the familiar story. Narration and brief soliloquies by Biblical characters will tie the music together. The choral selections are drawn from several different cantatas. The congregation will have the opportunity to join in on favorite carols. This also is the Sunday when poinsettias will decorate the front of the sanctuary.

Caroling to Homebound
Wednesday, December 18, 4:30-5:45 p.m.
- All children, teens, and adults are invited to load up in the van and come share your wonderful voices with some of our homebound members. We'll get back in time for supper at the church. After supper (at 6:15), there will be a Discovery Club Christmas Party.

Christmas Brunch & Carol Sing
Sunday, December 22, 9:30 a.m. - All the church family and friends are invited to gather in the Fellowship Hall for an informal brunch. You are welcome to bring something to share. Then we'll sing some favorite Christmas carols, as we prepare to go into Worship. This event is for all ages and will take the place of our regular Sunday School.

American Red Cross Blood Drive
Monday, December 23, 2:00-6:30 p.m. - Come give one of the most precious gifts of all--the gift of life! Hot cider and Christmas goodies (in addition to the usual snacks and beverages) in the Canteen! This has become a favorite destination for our community! Appointments are not necessary, but they can expedite the registration process. Please call the church office (704-938-4623) or visit www.redcrossblood.org (sponsor code First Presbyterian Kannapolis) to reserve a time.

Christmas Eve Service
Monday, December 24, 5:30 p.m. - What better way to begin Christmas than in church?  This service will be preceded by an extended fifteen minute musical prelude, which provides an opportunity for families and individuals to come early and unwind before the worship time. The service itself is an informal celebration with candles, carols and the Christmas story (told through a simple pageant by the children) for all ages. We will conclude with a joyous candle-lighting ceremony.
